• Takuya Onishi was born in 1975 in Tokyo. He graduated from Seiko High School in Yokohama in 1994 and received a Bachelor's degree in March 1998 from the department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo.
• He joined All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) in April 1998. From June 2003 until his retirement in March 2009, he worked as a co-pilot of Boeing 767 in ANA's Flight Crew Center.
• He was selected as an astronaut candidate by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in February 2009, and joined JAXA in April 2009. From April through July 2009, he attended ISS Astronaut Basic Training held at JAXA.
• Since April 2009, he has participated in about two years of Astronaut Candidate (ASCAN) Training at NASA, which includes scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction on the ISS systems, Extravehicular Activity (EVA), Robotics, physiological training, flight training using the T-38 jet trainer, and water and wilderness survival training.
• He has completed all basic training requirements, thus he was certified as an ISS astronaut in July, 2011.
• On September 19, 2011, NASA announced that Onishi would serve as an aquanaut aboard the Aquarius underwater laboratory during the NEEMO 15 undersea exploration mission from October 17-30, 2011. Delayed by stormy weather and high seas, the mission began on October 20, 2011. On the afternoon of October 21, Onishi and his crewmates officially became aquanauts, having spent over 24 hours underwater. NEEMO 15 ended early on October 26 due to the approach of Hurricane Rina.
• In November 2013, he was assigned as a crewmember for the ISS Expedition 47/48 mission.
