Glonass Program

Russia

Global'naya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema

Russian navigation program part of the Cosmos constellation. The satellites carry an atomic clock.

THE RUSSIAN GLONASS CONSTELLATION:

The Soviet Union started launches in the GLONASS navigation satellite system in 1982. All of the launches to date have carried three satellites into orbit, although on the early flights one or two of the satellites were non-functioning mass models. The first launch to carry three operating satellites was Cosmos 1778-1780 in 1986. Launches have used the four-stage Proton-K vehicle. The original launches were flown to a parking orbit at 51.6 deg but starting Cosmos 1710-1712 in 1985 the parking orbit was switched to 65 deg. The majority of launches have used variants of the Blok DM fourth stage, but more recently the Briz-M fourth stage has been used to place the satellites into orbits close to the operational ones. Planes and slots

The Glonass series orbit in three distinct planes that are 120 deg apart. Each plane has eight "slots".

Frequency:

The operating frequencies in MHz are computed from the channel number K.
Frequency (MHz) L1 = 1602 + 0.5625 * channel
L2 = 1246 + 0.4375 * channel

Launch list:

All GLONASS spacecraft are in the general COSMOS series. The COSMOS numbers invoked by USSPACECOM have often differed from the numbers (NNNN) associated in Russia; when different, the USSPACECOM COSMOS numbers are shown in parentheses. The corresponding GLONASS numbers are Russian numbers, followed by the numbers in parentheses that are sometimes attributed to them outside Russia.

Notes:

  1. NORAD Catalog Number is also known as U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM) object number and NASA catalog number.
  2. The numbers listed first in the "Kosmos Numbers" column are the designators assigned by the Russian Federation. Where these differ from the designators assigned by the United States, the latter are given in parentheses. (Editor's note: designators that differ are in red parentheses)
  3. Channel number, k, indicates L1 and L2 carrier frequencies:
       L1 = 1602. + 0.5625 k (MHz) k
       L2 = 1246. + 0.4375 k (MHz) k
  4. Date Withdrawn: The date listed is the date the satellite was removed from service (Moscow Time) as reported by the Coordinational Scientific Information Center, Moscow.
  5. The GLONASS numbering scheme used in this table includes the 8 "dummy" satellites orbited as ballast along with "real" satellites on the first 7 GLONASS launches. The second number in the "GLONASS Numbers" column is that assigned by the Russian Space Forces.
  6. New GLONASS channel allocations were introduced in September 1993 aimed at reducing interference to radio astronomy. Note the use of the same channel on pairs of antipodal satellites.
  7. This version of the table corrects the International ID and NORAD Catalog Number of GLONASS 786, 784, and 779.
  8. Satellite identifiers compiled by Richard B. Langley, Dept. of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, University of New Brunswick.
  9. GLONASS-80 through -82 naming conventions were changed in the table above based on research by Werner Gurtner and Roger Wood. The adopted numbers now agree with both the Russian constellation status and the NORAD two-line elements.

Notes:

The Table over the previous pages lists all of the satellites to be launched in the GLONASS constellation. The satellites used platforms called Uragan and these have flown as various “Block” variants, as have the corresponding Navstar satellites in the United States GPS constellation. Two launches in 1989 each carried two GLONASS satellites and a single Etalon passive geodetic satellite: the Etalon satellites are identified as having “ET” in the “Block” column of the previous Table.
The Russians assign serial numbers to the satellites, although most public launch announcements only use the "Cosmos" names assigned to the satellites. It must be stressed that while every attempt has been made to equate the serial numbers to the Cosmos numbers, there is room for error in doing this.
The serial numbers and the end-of-operations dates which are shown are taken from the web site of Nicolas Pillet (http://www.kosmonavtika.com/satellites/ouragan/ouragan-annexe2.html).
In the previous Table the first set of "Node" data (following the orbital inclination) are the ascending node longitudes at the time of the orbital epochs: the second set of node data (following the orbital plane designator) are the nodes projected forward to the epoch Apr 1.0. “LAO” is the longitude of the satellite around the orbit, with zero being taken as crossing the ascending node and being measured in the direction of travel.
